Thousand Legged Crow

It’s been awhile since I worked on any concept art for my prehistoric world idea… wow! 

I wanted to draw a weird creature really bad so I drew up this guy and tried to work out his anatomy… I’m not really sure if this is convincing or not haha.

The bones of this guy are full of holes, so it weighs significantly less than it appears. The 'Thousand Legged Crow' primarily travels via ground and can reach high speeds, due to it’s light bone mass.
It eats small rodents and fish.

More One Hour Paintings

Sorry I didn't post much last month... I've been really busy!

I had a show with RAWartists and I just got time to post some stuff I did last month.

I'm going to do a few posts so they can be organized better.

Here are some one hour paintings I did in July!

Live Wedding Painting + Some Older One Hour Paintings

I was recently commissioned to do a live painting of a couples wedding ceremony.

I had no real evidence that I could complete the task, besides showing my post of my One Hour Paintings. Luckily, it was the exact style they were looking for... and they were willing to trust me if I felt confident enough.

The final product.

 The day was June 15th, and location, Greystone Fields in Gibsonia, PA.

 Here is a picture of my set-up.

I did most of the work there, but I took it home to add a few more hours worth of painting.

This one is actually a one hour painting I did digitally in Photoshop!
I gave it restrictions by only using one brush, no UNDOs, and I painted it all on one layer.

And the one below ISN'T a one hour painting... just a watercolor landscape I did one evening.

Character Designs (Outlaw)

Just doing a little character design with watercolor.

Here are some more concept pieces for my "Outlaw world."

You might remember him from this older piece I did.

Then there is another main character I have been developing...

I've been leaning towards having the story told from his perspective instead of the Outlaw.

There are a lot of ideas stirring around for this project... I am taking it one day at a time, but I am feeling good about it!

One Hour Paintings

Last Thursday, I wanted to try something different...
So, I went back to my roots and painted some impressionism!

This was about an hour and a halves worth of work.

Then it hit me... maybe I could try to give myself a challenge and do timed paintings for a week!

I really enjoyed doing this, so I may continue to keep painting... we'll see!

I actually did TWO paintings this day of the same spot. The first was really early, about 6 AM.

Around 2 PM, I decided to do another one… it was lightly drizzling… so i figured, “why not.” But, I only got 15 minutes in before the downpour hit me though.

I noticed it dried and thought it was cool how the rain altered the painting.

All of these were one hour sessions only, aside from the rained on painting (which was 15 minutes) and this very last one.

The last was only 43 minutes because I got off work late… and it got really dark outside!

I could not see anymore!

Welcome to the Gun Show

I ripped my pants a few weeks ago… and I decided to make them cutoffs. No one thought I could pull it off.

I did.

With the extra scraps, I cut them up. Then I began to paint. This is the progression of a piece I made.

I Won First Place in the Laika Monthly Creative Challenge!

As the title states... I won with a record breaking 228 'LIKES' for their creative challenges.

I guess they are sending me something AWESOME and I'll be sure to post it when it gets here...

But I figured I'd post a few progress shots!

I painted this all with acrylic paint on newspaper.

It's based on the 1953 movie, "Robot Monster".

Some outlaw design I am messing with. I may or may not make this into a puppet, maybe a maquette…

I am trying something new with these two puppets. I am going to be attempting to  build replaceable jaw pieces to get a fuller sense of motion from the lip sync. I have never done something like this, so this is an experiment as well as a performance test.

The hands are covered in masking tape now, so I can get more of a curve out of the finger motion, without having one weak spot.

I plan to eventually make their clothes out of newspaper, so that's why the body isn't sculpted like the face, etc.

Concept Art for a New Old World

Hey guys, on the side this summer, I've started to develop a new prehistoric world, that may eventually lead up to my next stop motion project.

I don't really have names for any of these creatures yet, but if you are familiar with my character Byrd, I am essentially creating the world his kind existed in (yet I haven't revealed his design yet! :]).

 

This was the first watercolor/concept art I did, which lead to the growth of more ideas. I wanted this creature to be an herbivore, and it's intelligence is that of a dodo bird. These creatures are currently over populated in this region.

Now this creature, is what I consider to be an humanoid type. They are pretty big to start off, and they are carnivores, hunters, gathers, and 'civilized'. They are intellectual enough to use basic tools, and they hunt in packs, similar to wolves.
These guys, use their muscular arms for majority of their movement, a lot how a gorilla would travel.
Also, the decorative piece that resides on their pelvic region are a status for the male hunter. They acquire these from a larger herbivore that they hunt, which is made of their bone. At a young age, the males go through a ritual where they are given one of these hip pieces, and they have to grow into them, and endure the weight/pain, or be banned from the tribe. It should also be noted that once the bone is broken (from years of hunting) you are retired, but if you are able to go years with still maintaining your piece, you are ascended as one of the elders of the tribe.

The bones are painted vibrant colors during a ceremony, which is to confuse and lure in dumber life forms.

Here you can see the beasts hunting down the previous, Flamingo-like creature, using their pelvic bone and tremendous weight to their advantage.

I tend to find it humorous that this flamingo-like bird has become one of the easiest prey in this world. The creature in the water, it actually in the middle of a metamorphosis state, similar to the stage between tadpole and frog. They start off as only water dwellers, but as it grows, the gills start to be replace by lungs, and become mainly land dwellers, that reside near bodies of water (like most amphibians).

I have a lot more planned mentally, but I'll update you with more work before the summer ends. Also, I should prob try to come up with names...
